Madison, WI – Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin PAC announced their enthusiastic endorsement of Democratic candidate, Scott Hassett, for Attorney General. Hassett is the only candidate for Attorney General who will stand up to protect the health and privacy rights of Wisconsin women. Hassett's Republican opponent, incumbent J.B. Van Hollen, has an appalling record of working to limit women's access to reproductive health care in the State of Wisconsin and is endorsed by Pro-Life Wisconsin, the most extreme anti-choice group in the state. “Scott Hassett supports a woman's right to make health care decisions privately without interference from politicians,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Executive Director Lisa Subeck. “As Attorney General, Scott Hassett will stand up for a women's right to choose safe and legal abortion as decided in the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade. This stands in stark contrast to his opponent, J.B. Van Hollen, who has used his office to wage baseless attacks on institutions providing abortion services and training for abortion providers.” During his term as Attorney General, J.B. Van Hollen has put politics before the law in his attempts to limit women's access to safe and legal abortion services. He is endorsed by Wisconsin Right to Life and Pro-Life Wisconsin, who claims to only endorse candidates with the most extreme positions including a “no exceptions” policy on abortion even in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the health or life of the women. This position is in direct conflict with the very laws the Attorney General is charged with upholding. Additionally, Van Hollen has asked the legislature to allow him to file a lawsuit against the federal government to stop the implementation of health care reform. This law protects Wisconsin women from discriminatory health insurance practices, makes health care more affordable and accessible, and expands access to critical women's health screenings and family planning services. “Wisconsin women cannot afford to reelect an Attorney General who is willing to jeopardize women's health to advance his anti-choice political agenda,” continued Subeck. “It is clear that Scott Hassett is the only candidate for Attorney General who will put upholding the law above political gain.
