NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Applauds Dane County Officials for Supporting Women’s Health
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lisa Subeck September 23, 2009 608-358-7090 NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Applauds Dane County Officials for Supporting Women’s Health Madison, WI – Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin joined a diverse coalition of organizations, community members, medical professionals, religious leaders, and policy makers at the City-County Building to celebrate what was proclaimed to be Women’s Health Day in Madison and Dane County by Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk. The proclamation of Women’s Health Day by Mayor Cieslewicz and County Executive Falk affirms a strong community commitment to ensuring access to the full range of reproductive health care services and recognizing reproductive health care as basic health care essential to the well being of women and families. Women throughout Wisconsin and the nation lack sufficient access to reproductive health services. “Women spend 68% more in out-of-pocket health care costs than men, largely because of reproductive health care supplies and services. And with only four abortion providers in the state, women often must travel great distances and incur additional costs to obtain abortion care,” says NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Executive Director Lisa Subeck. “Yet today we celebrate and recognize the dedication of the health providers in Dane County who make women’s health care a priority in their practices.” Today’s event, organized by the Dane County Coalition for Women’s Health, highlighted the commitment of the Dane County community to women’s health care. Women in Dane County have access to four family planning health centers providing affordable STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, and birth control. Dane County is one of only three counties in the state where women have access to abortion care. The event also celebrated Madison and Dane County achievements in women’s health, including impressive maternal and infant health outcomes and local protections for breastfeeding mothers. “As a County Board Supervisor, I am proud of our community’s commitment to women’s health care,” says Dane County Board Supervisor and NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Foundation Chair Carousel Bayrd. “Thank you to the health care professionals in Dane County who value women’s health care and are committed to ensuring all women in our community have access to the full range of reproductive health care choices.”
