NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin's Response to President Obama's Repeal of the Global Gag Rule
For immediate release January 23, 2009 NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Response to President Obama’s Repeal of the Global Gag Rule NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Executive Director Lisa Subeck released the following statement in response to the President Barack Obama’s action today to repeal the Global Gag rule. “We are pleased with President Barack Obama’s announcement today that he is overturning the Global Gag Rule. This punitive and unjust rule, enacted by former President George W. Bush during on his first day in office in 2001, prohibited international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive U.S. government funds from using their own private funds to perform or provide abortions, lobby their own governments for change in abortion laws, provide public education about abortion, refer women to safe abortion providers, or counsel their clients about abortion even in countries where abortion is legal. Rescinding the Global Gag Order restores the right to basic reproductive care to women living in certain parts of the world where NGOs are the only healthcare providers and opens up access to safe and acccurate reproductive health care for already vulnerable women. Today’s action affirms President Obama’s pro-choice stance and commitment to providing women access to reproductive health care. As we take this important step toward protecting reproductive rights, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin looks forward to continuing work on the state and national level to further access to reproductive health care choices for all women.” For more information, contact Lisa Subeck at (608) 287-0176.
