Supreme Court Issues Decision on Federal Abortion Ban
Court ignores doctors’ concerns and long-standing law Madison, WI – In response to the US Supreme Court’s ruling upholding the Federal Abortion Ban, Kelda Helen Roys, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, issued the following statement: “Elections have consequences. We knew that Bush’s appointees were hostile to reproductive rights and privacy. With today’s decision, the Court has veered sharply in an anti-choice direction. “Never before has the Court taken such a callous approach to women’s health. With this decision, the Court upholds significant and far-reaching abortion restrictions without any exception to safeguard a woman’s health. The Federal Abortion Ban criminalizes safe types of abortion as early as the twelfth week of pregnancy. This Ban allows doctors to be sent to prison and fined for choosing what may be the safest treatment option for their patients. It is opposed by major medical groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “Today’s decision is a signal that the health of women is no longer of central importance to our Supreme Court.” NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is currently examining the decision in detail and will issue a more comprehensive analysis shortly.
