34th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Marked by Challenges, Opportunities
Madison, WI – NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, the political arm of the state’s pro-choice movement, marked the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on Monday. The landmark Supreme Court case guaranteed women the right to privacy in their reproductive decisions, including the right to have a safe, legal abortion.
“While voters have clearly rejected the anti-choice agenda by delivering sweeping electoral victories to pro-choice candidates last November, much remains to be done to secure reproductive freedom,” said Kelda Helen Roys, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin. “The pro-choice movement is working to guarantee all reproductive rights for women – the right to prevent unintended pregnancy, to bear healthy children, and access to comprehensive reproductive health care – in addition to the right to a safe and legal abortion.”
In 2007, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin will be working to repeal Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban, which could be enforced if the US Supreme Court modifies or repeals Roe. The political organization will also work to increase access to birth control, including emergency contraception, to reduce infant mortality, and to ensure that young people receive honest, medically accurate sex education.
“Wisconsinites value freedom and privacy – that’s why they support the pro-choice movement’s common sense approach to women’s reproductive rights,” continued Roys. “We will not be satisfied until every woman, regardless of income, race, educational level, or geography, truly has the full range of reproductive choices available.” NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin’s annual Roe v. Wade Celebration & Silent Auction will be held from 5 to 8 PM this evening at Milwaukee’s Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Governor Jim Doyle and Cristina Page, author of How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America: Freedom, Politics, and the War on Sex, will address supporters from around the state.
