Extreme Green: 44 Reasons for Ladies to Look Out!

Mark Green’s Congressional record: 44 votes to restrict abortion and access to birth control, 0 votes for common sense measures to prevent unintended pregnancy

Madison, WI – Congressman Mark Green, Republican candidate for Governor, confirmed through a spokesperson yesterday that he supports Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban, which makes abortion a felony for women and doctors, including in cases of rape, incest, and where a woman’s health is threatened.

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin held an event yesterday on the capitol steps where pro-choice citizens, sexual assault survivors, and students expressed concern about what it would mean for Wisconsin if Green were elected Governor. Green’s campaign confirmed Green’s extreme stance that abortion should be a crime.

Congressman Green has an extensive voting record attacking freedom, privacy, liberty, and personal responsibility over four terms in Congress and several years in the state legislature. Time and again, he has tried to divide Wisconsinites by politicizing the abortion issue, yet he refuses to work for common sense solutions to reduce the need for abortion.

“Mark Green wants to bring the divisiveness of Congress to Wisconsin, but voters here won’t buy it. We value privacy, freedom, and personal responsibility,” said Kelda Helen Roys, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin. “We need leaders who work to prevent unintended pregnancy – not politicians who want to insert government into the personal and private decision about whether to have an abortion.”

Green’s contempt for personal privacy does not stop with his efforts to criminalize abortion in all cases. He has led attempts to block access to birth control and has a zero percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America on common sense preventative measures.

Congressman Green has taken over $70,000 from the insurance industry, but has voted to let insurance companies refuse to cover birth control, even when they cover other prescription drugs like Viagra.

“Mark Green is too extreme for Wisconsin – he has voted lockstep with right-wing extremists in politicizing the abortion issue, letting pharmacists withhold birth control, blocking emergency contraception access for rape victims, and slashing public funding for birth control and family planning,” said Roys. “Wisconsin women cannot afford to let Mark Green become Governor.”
