The Truth About John Gard: He Votes Against Women's Privacy, Freedom, & Health
New Gard ad should not fool voters in the 8th CD
Green Bay, WI – Republican candidate for Congress John Gard released an ad today purporting that he has helped to advance women’s health as a state legislator. Voters deserve to know the truth about John Gard: he has repeatedly voted to attack women’s freedom, privacy, and liberty.
John Gard has led the attack on a woman’s right to receive private, comprehensive medical care. Gard’s record is long and it is clear: he does not believe women should have privacy, freedom, or personal responsibility when determining their own health care.
Gard’s record speaks for itself: • Gard voted to let pharmacists withhold prescriptions like birth control from women based on the pharmacists’ personal beliefs • Gard voted to block a bill that would have ensured that rape victims are offered emergency contraception, or “the morning after pill,” in emergency rooms • Gard voted to ban birth control for all patients served by UW health services, including emergency contraception for rape victims • Gard voted to gut public funding for family planning services • Gard voted to keep poor women from enrolling in programs to provide basic health care, like cancer screening and contraceptive services • Gard voted against requiring insurance companies to cover birth control when they cover other prescriptions like Viagra, even though he has taken thousands from insurance companies
“John Gard has tried again and again to insert government and politicians into women’s personal and private decisions about birth control and whether or not to have an abortion,” said Kelda Helen Roys, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin. “Wisconsin women and their families should not be fooled – voters who value freedom, privacy, liberty, and the personal responsibility that comes with them should reject Gard’s extreme politics.”
Gard has repeatedly sided with right-wing political extremists to make divisive attacks on abortion – putting these personal and private decisions in the hands of politicians. While working to make abortion more difficult and dangerous, he has also blocked the common sense preventative measures that could reduce unintended pregnancy – and therefore the need for abortion.
NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is the political arm of the pro-choice movement, building a culture of freedom and personal responsibility. Our political advocacy ensures women the full range of reproductive health care services, including preventing unintended pregnancies, bearing healthy children, and choosing safe, legal abortion.
