NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Names New Leader - Local Activist Eager to March Forward in the Fight to Protect Reproductive Rights

Posted: 04/01/2004

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is proud to announce the hire of Kelda Helen Roys today as the organization’s new Executive Director.

“Kelda’s skills, integrity and passion for the issues are exactly what NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin needs as we look to meet the challenge of continued anti-choice attacks on some of our most basic rights,” says Nancy Nusbaum, Chair of the organization’s Board of Directors.

“Reproductive choice is in greater peril today than it has been in the past thirty years,” said Roys. “Many of President Bush’s nominees to the federal courts have extremist views about women’s rights. I’m excited to have the opportunity to lead NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin at this critical time.”

Roys has a strong history of activism on behalf of women, reproductive rights and privacy. She worked to elect a pro-choice Governor of Wisconsin in 2002 and has been involved with the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Innocence Project.

"Kelda's proven commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of all people will continue as she takes over leading the political arm of Wisconsin’s pro-choice movement,” Nusbaum added.

“U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft is working to open thousands of women’s private medical records,” said Roys. “Access to basic reproductive health services, and accurate information about disease prevention and birth control, are slowly slipping away under the attacks of the Bush administration and anti-choice legislators here in Wisconsin.”

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin is working to mobilize Wisconsinites to attend the March for Women’s Lives on April 25th in Washington, D.C. This March is part of NARAL’s efforts to encourage pro-choice people to get active.

"Merely being pro-choice will not stop a single anti-choice bill or preserve a single dollar of essential health services funding," said Roys. "We need everyone to get informed, get active in our educational programs and lobbying efforts, and get out to elect strong pro-choice leaders to local, state, and national offices."
