NARAL Wisconsin Honors Reproductive Freedom in Milwaukee: Calls on Pro-Choice Wisconsinites to Take Action to Preserve Choice
On Thursday evening pro-choice people from across Greater Milwaukee will gather to celebrate reproductive freedom and learn more about the very grave threats to comprehensive reproductive health care right now. Special guests at this annual event include Rep. Lena Taylor and the staff of Affiliated Medical Services, one of just five abortion clinics remaining in our state.
Reproductive choice is threatened in unprecedented ways today. President Bush is poised to sign the first federal law criminalizing safe and necessary abortion procedures. The U.S. Supreme Court is just one vote away from overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision legalizing abortion nationwide, and a vacancy is expected on our highest court in the coming months. President Bush cites Justices Scalia and Thomas as his model justices – both believe Roe was incorrectly decided.
In Wisconsin, women’s access to quality, comprehensive health care is profoundly threatened. Measures seeking to permit pharmacists to refuse to fill birth control prescriptions and permit medical professionals to refuse to provide or discuss a wide range of reproductive health care services, even medically urgent services, and measures seeking to de-fund Planned Parenthood are all pending. “There has never been a more important time for those who believe in the right to comprehensive reproductive health care services to take action,” notes Deborah Lukovich, NARAL Wisconsin’s Executive Director.
“Our annual Milwaukee event is an essential component of NARAL Wisconsin’s mobilization to protect freedom of choice. At the event, we will again screen the Choice for America television ads, part of NARAL Pro-Choice America’s multi-million dollar, multi-market, multi-year grassroots and public education campaign seeking to urge pro-choice Americans to take unprecedented action to preserve reproductive freedom. Attending our event is one simple way for pro-choice Wisconsinites to declare their pro-choice values,” adds Deborah Lukovich.
