Celebrate Choice across Wisconsin this week: Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Cudahy, Madison, Green Bay, Appleton, River Falls, Evansville

Modified: 08/28/2003

This week more than 400 pro-choice Wisconsinites will gather at eighteen parties across our state to honor reproductive freedom, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and learning more about the very grave threats to choice today.

“Reproductive freedom is more threatened today than at any time since 1973’s landmark decision, Roe v. Wade. Pro-choice people must act to preserve choice and must act now. In the years before 1973, 5,000 women lost their lives each year as a result of illegal abortion at the hands of untrained providers in unsanitary conditions. Many thousands more struggled with infection and infertility. We must act now to ensure that our children and grandchildren never know this kind of terror,” notes Deborah Lukovich, NARAL Wisconsin’s Executive Director.

“Right now Wisconsin legislators are seeking to de-fund Planned Parenthood and are even pursuing measures specifically crafted to hinder access to birth control and comprehensive prenatal care. Reproductive freedom is clearly under siege,” continues Deborah Lukovich.

Choice Celebrations offer an outstanding opportunity for pro-choice people to learn about concrete ways to protect choice. Attendees will become NARAL Wisconsin members, join the Choice Action Network (CAN) e-mail alert system and sign petitions for the Freedom of Choice Act, a federal initiative affirming the original intentions of Roe. Legislators have been invited to Choice Celebrations in their districts and Peg Lautenschlager, Attorney General, will be NARAL Wisconsin’s special guest at the Choice Celebration in Green Bay.

“These Choice Celebrations will be among the largest demonstrations of grassroots pro-choice commitment in Wisconsin’s recent history,” continues Deborah Lukovich.
