Senate Votes to Criminalize Safe, Legal Abortion Procedures -- NARAL Wisconsin Honors Senators Kohl and Feingold for Opposing this Ban
“NARAL Wisconsin and pro-choice people across our state are profoundly disappointed by the passage in the U.S. Senate of S.3, the so-called ‘Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003’ yesterday. Using inflammatory, medically inaccurate rhetoric, the Senate’s new anti-choice leadership attacked reproductive freedom in voting to criminalize safe abortion procedures. This measure will endanger women’s health – within weeks, the law will require physicians across our country to censor any discussion with patients about some necessary and safe medical options.
S.3 contains the very same constitutional flaws struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in Stenberg v. Carhart. Anti-choice Senators seem so intent on hindering access to comprehensive reproductive health care that they are willing to ignore Supreme Court precedent,” stated Deborah Lukovich, NARAL Wisconsin’s Executive Director, after yesterday’s vote.
“NARAL Wisconsin applauds Senators Kohl and Feingold for defending women in Wisconsin and voting against this measure. They exemplify commitment to women and families in a political climate sometimes hostile to the needs of more than half our population,” continued Deborah Lukovich.
