NARAL Wisconsin Honors National Day of Appreciation of Abortion Providers
Today NARAL Wisconsin joins pro-choice people across the nation in honoring the National Day of Appreciation of Abortion Providers. This day recognizes those who endure ongoing threats and harassment and sometimes risk their lives to make reproductive freedom for American women possible.
Honoring abortion providers is especially important in Wisconsin – access to abortion here has deteriorated dramatically in the last decade: • There is no hospital-based abortion in Wisconsin. • Between 1992 and 2002 more than two-thirds of Wisconsin’s clinics closed. Today only five remain. • These five clinics are in three cities – Milwaukee, Madison and Appleton. The vast majority of Wisconsin women must therefore drive a great distance to access legal abortion. • In recent years, the Wisconsin Legislature has enacted numerous measures specifically crafted to hinder access to abortion including parental consent and a mandatory 24-hour waiting period. • These hindrances disproportionately affect young and low-income women.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 11, NARAL Wisconsin will sponsor a counterprotest at the Madison Abortion Clinic. Pro-choice people will gather to express their gratitude to the staff of the clinic. Carrying signs and banners bearing messages including “You are so brave” and “You save women’s lives everyday,” they will counter the anti-choice protesters seen at the clinic on a regular basis. Please join us at 1pm tomorrow!
