June 2008 Newsletter

Posted: 06/23/2008

The staff and board members at NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin are sad to announce that after leading our organization for four years, Kelda Helen Roys has stepped down from her position as Executive Director to focus her energy on running for public office.

Kelda was instrumental in expanding NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin’s political relationships, communications capacity, and grassroots membership. She successfully worked for the election of a pro-choice governor and significant pro-choice gains in the state legislature.

As the political leader of the reproductive rights movement, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin looks forward to continuing our work to expand access to affordable health care for all Wisconsin women and make further pro-choice gains in the state legislature this fall.  Read on to find out how you can get involved.

Yours for choice,

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Foundation Board & NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin Board

WI CLN smallJoin the Choice Lobby Network!

The Choice Lobby Network (CLN) is our new network of advocates throughout the state who lobby their representatives from home.  Our CLN intern is working hard to keep our CLN members up to date on crucial legislation and steps you can take to support choice

As a CLN member, you’ll become a skilled, trained, and active member of the reproductive rights movement, which will be especially important as we gear up for this crucial election.  Through CLN, you can develop relationships with NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin staff and interns, bringing you into the forefront of the reproductive rights movement.

Give Wisconsin a Roe of Our Own

Wisconsin women can no longer depend on the federal government to protect their right to choose.  Last year, the Federal Abortion Ban criminalized abortions that were safest for women, leaving no exception even to save the woman’s health.

That’s why we need a Roe of Our Own, to make sure that abortion is never illegal in Wisconsin again.  Sign our petition here!

Talking About Choice

Learn how to articulate your pro-choice values.  In each newsletter, we present a typical, anti-choice myth, and show you how to effectively respond with pro-choice facts!

Anti-Choice Statement: Being pro-choice means supporting abortion on demand throughout all 40 weeks of pregnancy.

Pro-Choice Response: Being pro-choice means supporting every woman’s right to make informed, responsible decisions about pregnancy and childbearing.  “Abortion on demand” is inflammatory rhetoric meant to polarize the debate and suggest that women are frivolous and irresponsible.  I support the balance struck in Roe v. Wade, which allows the woman to make the decision about an abortion prior to fetal viability.  After viability, states can ban abortion except when a woman’s life or health is endangered.
