October 2007 Newsletter
Dear Friend, October is Compassionate Care for Rape Victims month. The Compassionate Care for Rape Victims (CCRV) bill [SB 129/AB 377] would require Wisconsin hospitals to provide information about and access to emergency contraception to rape victims. Currently, only one-third of the hospitals in Wisconsin routinely provide this care. Anti-birth control extremist Mark Gundrum recently gutted the bill by amending it to allow hospitals to withhold critical information about and access to emergency contraception from rape victims if the hospital is opposed to birth control – without any protection for victims. Every rape victim deserves to receive the minimum standard of care, including the chance to help prevent pregnancy after an assault. What can you do? The CCRV Organizing Kit is now available - it includes a fact sheet, petition, a sample letter to the editor, and information about how to contact your state representative. Contact us at info@prochoicewisconsin.org and we will email you a copy. To victory!

Are You One of the Million? It is estimated that nearly one million people suffer from depression in Wisconsin today. Too many people don't know what to do, but it's easy to find out. As a part of National Depression Screening Day, NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin and Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton encourage you to visit www.ltgov.wisconsin.gov for a free, confidential screening.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression affects twice as many women as men. A variety of factors unique to women's lives are suspected to play a role in developing depression, including reproductive or hormonal factors, abuse and oppression, and greater stress due to their role as caretakers. Reproductive causes include the menstrual cycle, the postpartum period, infertility and sometimes menopause.
Talking About Choice Learn how to articulate your pro-choice values. In each newsletter, we will present a typical anti-choice statement, and show you how to effectively respond with the pro-choice facts! Anti-Choice Myth: Women who have abortions also have a higher rate of depression. Pro-Choice Fact: The decision whether or not to have an abortion is one of the most complex and difficult a woman will ever make. However, according to extensive studies, having an abortion does not lead to a higher incidence of depression in women. In fact, numerous studies have failed to show that women who choose abortion suffer any long-term psychological effects.
