April 2007 Newsletter

Posted: 04/19/2007

Greetings!

This week, for the first time since Roe v. Wade, our nation's highest court has allowed an abortion ban with no exception to preserve women's health to stand. Bush's successful attempt to stack the court with anti-choice extremists has paid off big-time, and women and their doctors will pay the price.

Here at NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, we have already begun mobilizing activists statewide to repeal Wisconsin's own criminal abortion ban, and to help pass the federal Freedom of Choice Act. With your help, we will elect a pro-choice Congress and president - and protect women's health and privacy.

Yours for Choice,

Kelda Helen Roys

Bravo: Rep. Tammy Baldwin

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin says *BRAVO* to Rep. Tammy Baldwin for her work on women's health care. Rep. Baldwin introduced the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program Reauthorization Act which recently passed the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. The bill increased funding for a breast and cervical cancer screening program servicing low-income women who lack adequate health insurance.  Rep. Baldwin knows that screening and early detection saves lives - and because of her efforts - this important reproductive health program will now be able to hundreds of thousands of more women nationwide.

Bravo: Gov. Jim Doyle

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin says *BRAVO* to Governor Jim Doyle for his work to expand the Medicaid Family Planning Waiver program. In his recent budget proposal, Governor Doyle included an increase in the eligibility of the Family Planning Waiver to individuals earning less than 200% of the poverty level (those earning less than $19,600 annually) from 185%. If this proposal stays in the budget, thousands of individuals would be eligible to receive routine reproductive health care visits, birth control supplies, pregnancy testing and counseling, emergency contraception, pap smears and cancer screening, and sexually transmitted infection tests and treatment for free! Thank you, Governor Doyle, for supporting low-income Wisconsinites and ensuring their access to family planning!

Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Hearing April 25

After six years, the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Bill is finally getting a hearing at the state Capitol! We need every supporter to join us at the hearing on April 25. We must show strong support for this bill!

The Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Bill (CCRV) is a proactive pro-choice bill requiring hospitals to provide victims of sexual assault with information on and access to emergency contraception. Only one-third of Wisconsin emergency rooms unconditionally officer EC to rape victims. Greater access to EC will decrease the number of unintended pregnancies and therefore reduce the need for abortion as a result of sexual assault, as well as lessen the physical and psychological trauma already incurred by victims.  For more information about CCRV, read our fact sheet.

What: Compassionate Care for Rape Victims hearing in front of the Senate Health Committee
When: Wednesday, April 25 at 10:00 am
Where: Room 411 South, State Capitol, Madison
Your role: Attend the hearing and register in favor of the bill (SB 129). You do not need to speak at the hearing to register in favor.  To learn more about how to register in favor, read our fact sheet.

Please RSVP to let us know you will attend the hearing.  Email me at Carmen@ProChoiceWisconsin.org.

Talking About Choice

Learn how to articulate your pro-choice values. In each newsletter, we will present a typical anti-choice statement, and show you how to effectively respond with the pro-choice facts!

Anti-Choice Myth: Abortion should not be permitted for rape victims because it is wrong to punish a child for the sins of the father. Besides, pregnancy rarely happens as a result of rape. Women can get immediate medical treatment to prevent pregnancy.

Pro-Choice Reality: It is important that a rape or incest survivor has all options available to her so she can make the best decision for her mental and physical health.  Some five percent of rape survivors become pregnant - an estimated 30,000 per year in the U.S. alone, and unfortunately, sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes. While emergency contraception (EC) can decrease the possibility of pregnancy, many hospitals do not provide EC counseling or access to victims of sexual assault. All women deserve the ability to make their own private decisions about their bodies - to be free from violence, to prevent unintended pregnancy, and to have access to safe, legal abortion.
