LTE: Palin's record, not role as governor, is the problem
by Carousel Bayrd, Dane County supervisor ¦ Wisconsin State Journal ¦ 17 September 2008 Gov. Sarah Palin is qualified to run for vice president. If George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were qualified to run for president as governors, then Palin is qualified, too. It's her record we need to focus on. I found it outrageous when I read that the town of Wasilla, Alaska, billed rape victims up to $1,300 for conducting rape exams. Charging victims to investigate their crimes? Palin cried ignorance. I am willing to believe she did not know the town policy when she became mayor. As a local elected official myself, I know there are hundreds of laws to learn. But, when the Alaska Legislature singled out her town for being the only community in Alaska to charge rape victims, and when Wasilla's police chief defended the policy to the state, it became impossible for her to not know. In my decades as an advocate, I have never heard of anything more outrageous and despicable. For the past month, I personally disagreed with Palin. Now I think she is a disgrace. -- Carousel Bayrd, Dane County supervisor, Madison
