Lawmakers consider repeal of Wisconsin's abortion ban

Modified: 01/22/2008

Associated Press ¦ 22 January 2008

State lawmakers are reviving an attempt to repeal Wisconsin's 158-year-old ban on abortions -- which they fear would be enforced if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Wisconsin is one of only four states with laws still on the books making abortions illegal.

But Wisconsin Planned Parenthood political director Chris Taylor says Wisconsin is the only state whose law includes penalties for the women seeking an abortion.

Wisconsin Right to Life supports keeping the law in place in case the court ruling legalizing abortions nationally is overturned.

A bill to repeal Wisconsin's law was introduced last session but went nowhere. The new proposal is from Democratic Sen. Mark Miller of Monona and Democratic Rep. Terese Berceau of Madison.
