Hospitals must give out morning-after pill when asked under bill

Posted: 12/06/2007

by Associated Press ¦ MN CBS WCCO Radio ¦ 6 December 2007

Hospitals would have to provide rape victims with the morning-after pill upon request under a bill the state Assembly will vote on Tuesday.

One version of the measure would allow hospitals to opt out of dispensing the pill on moral or religious grounds.

The Senate passed a version of the bill without the opt out provision back in May.

Supporters say the bill is needed to provide a basic level of care for sexual assault victims.

Anti-abortion group Pro-Life Wisconsin opposes the mandate.

The morning-after pill is sometimes known by its brand name Plan B. Taken with the first 72 hours after unprotected sex it can reduce the chances of getting pregnant.
