Phone Bank Volunteer Instructions

Modified: 11/09/2007

The following is instructions for Voice for Choice volunteers.

Arrive on time and sign in.

Collect a set of phone materials including:

• the phone list
• the phone script
• additional information on the legislation, event or issue
• a Questions? sheet
• a Voice for Choice Bingo board
• a tally sheet
• a pen

Practice reading the script aloud.  Be sure you understand how the phone list is to be marked and whether or not you should be leaving messages.

Smile while talking on the phone (amazingly, your smile can be heard over the phone) and speak in a relaxed and friendly manner.

Speak only with the person whose name appears on the list.

Make calls in the order the names apprear on the list.  If you complete your list, get a new one from the phone bank supervisor.

Follow the script. Do not get involved in long conversations, and never argue with the person.  Do not answer policy questions or attempt to guess answers to their questions.  If the issue is not addressed in supplemental materials you are given, tell the person someone will get back with them and note the person's name, phone number and qeustions on the Questions? sheet.

When you reach the person and get responses to the questions, carefully mark the responses on the list.

When the phone session is over:

• Complete your tally sheet and note the number of completed calls you made
• Alert the phone bank supervisor to any issues raised numerous times by people you contacted.
• Sign up for your next volunteer shift

THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK!
