How to Collect Petition Signatures

Modified: 06/24/2008

Petition collecting is the process of gathering signatures in support of, or opposition to, a particular issue. Most petitions are aimed at advancing policy or legislation.

Effective petitions are targeted at decision-makers who have the power to move an issue forward or block a bad idea.

Why do we collect petition signatures?

Petition signatures are a great way to show decision-makers that people care about the issue at hand. In the process of gathering petition signatures, we also educate our friends and family about the values of freedom, privacy, and choice. Making that personal connection is an empowering experience.

How to collect signatures

Getting your friends and family to sign a petition can start with a simple conversation. Whether you are having coffee with a co-worker, at your book club meeting, or out with your running buddy, try approaching the topic with a question like “Did you know that Wisconsin still has an archaic abortion ban on the books that would immediately go into affect if Roe v. Wade is overturned?”  This question can really open the door. Most people will indicate in their response how they feel about the situation. From there, you can use resources like fact sheets to educate your friends and family about the situation and offer them a way to make a difference – by signing the petition.

What if someone does not agree?

Some people may not agree with you - try to find the source of their opposition and see if there are alternative viewpoints you can offer. Remember to point out that this petition simply asks for support on an issue. If that does not work, agree to disagree. Expressing a viewpoint that is important through respectful conversation is something we can all support.

What happens with the petitions?

Send signed petitions back to NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin at 122 State Street, Suite 308, Madison WI 53703.  The petitions will be delivered to the State Capitol so that your state legislators know that people across the state want to see a vote on this important legislation. Also, petition signers who have indicated interest will receive updates from NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin. This helps to ensure that more pro-choice people stay informed and take action on future issues.
