How to Contact Your Legislators
Writing a letter, sending an email or simply calling your legislator's office are great ways to convey your opinions, concerns or support to those who represent you. Contact elected officials to ask them to support or oppose a bill, to thank them for their vote on a bill or to ask them their position on a bill/issue. Find out who your state representatives are To find out who your state representatives are, visit Who are my legislators? Enter your address. Click on your representative's name. Make a note of your representative's phone number, email address or office address. Calling Your Legislators A phone call is the quickest way to share your views. It is very useful when time is short. • Compose a short message before you call. • Be prepared to speak with a staff person. It is unlikely that you will be able to speak directly with your legislator. Tell the staffer that you are a constituent and ask them to let your legislator know your views. Sending an Email This option may also be useful if you want to send your message quickly or to more than one legislator. • Do not use all capital letters or all lowercase letters. • Do no use chat speak. • Message should be no more than two screens in length • Use a white background with black 12 point font for the text. Do not use color backgrounds, colored text, fonts too small or too large, or anything moving or flashing; these all distract the reader from your message. Email addresses: State Senate email: sen.lastname@legis.wisconsin.gov State Assembly Representative John Doe email: rep.lastname@legis.wisconsin.gov Writing a Letter Clearly expressed letters are a way to educate your legislators and to register your opinion. •Use personal or business stationery. •Include your return address and be sure to mention that you are a constituent. •Be courteous and to the point. Your legislators are representing you and your opinion is important. •Mention the specific piece of legislation you support or oppose, if possible. •Ask what your elected official's position is on the legislation. •Thank the legislator who agrees with you or who is a sponsor of the legislation you support. How to address your letter: State Senate Senator John Doe Room [number] [direction] State Capitol P.O. Box 7882 Madison, WI 53703-7882 State Assembly Representative John Doe Room [number] [direction] State Capitol P.O. Box 8952 Madison, WI 53708 Governor The Honorable Governor Jim Doyle Office of the Governor 115 East State Capitol Madison, WI 53702 Why is it important that you include your address? No matter what medium you use to contact your state representatives, make sure you include your address to prove that you are a constituent (you live in your representative's district). Elected officials are more likely to take your request into consideration when they are making the decision of how to vote on a bill if you are one of their constituents. Receiving a response You may receive a response from your state representative telling you why he or she is supporting or not supporting the bill/issue. If you receive a response either by email or mail, please send NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin a copy. You can mail a copy to 122 State Street, Suite 308, Madison, WI 53703 or forward an email to info@prochoicewisconsin.org. Thanks!
