How to Register in Favor/Against a Bill at the Capitol

Modified: 06/24/2008

Learn how to register in favor/against a bill at the state capitol in 8 easy steps!

1. Go to the state capitol any time after the scheduled hearing start time. Hearings usually start at 10 AM and, depending on the schedule of the committee, can go all day long.  Click here to visit our legislation to watch page to find out about upcoming choice related hearings.

2. Ask the Info Desk on the first floor in the rotunda for the committee and room as the capitol can be confusing.

3. Go to the hearing room.

4. Pick up a registration slip on the table just inside the door --- they are usually inside the room, but sometimes are available in the hallway outside. See an example of a registration slip to the left.

5. Fill out the date and the bill number, example “SB 138” or “AB 222.” If you don't know the bill number ask someone or leave it blank.

6. Print your name and your home address. You can print your email address if you’d like, though it is not required.

7. Print “SELF” in the “organization you represent” line. Note: You are NOT representing NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin! Legally, only NPCW lobbyists can say they are representing the organization.

8. Select the check-box “registering in favor/against the bill, but not speaking” depending on your view.

If you are interested in seeing how a committee hearing works, please stay to watch. Committee hearings are always open to the public and this is YOUR legislature.
