100 Ways You Can Fight for Choice

Looking for a way to protect reproductive rights and the freedom to make the personal and private decisions about birth control and abortion? Look no further! Here is a list of 100 things you can do TODAY to fight for choice.


1. Join the Choice Action Network and receive regular updates on reproductive health issues via e-mail.

2. Register to vote and vote pro-choice. Visit the Government Accountability Board website for more information.

3. Put a NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin sign in your window.

4. Write a Letter to the Editor urging pro-choice people in your community to be vigilant about protecting a woman’s right to choose.

5. Wear a NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin button or sticker at least 15 days a year.

6. Learn the difference between Medical Abortion and Emergency Contraception. For more information, read the Emergency Contraception versus Medical Abortion fact sheet.

7. Put a NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin bumper sticker on your car.

8. Make a donation  to NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin to keep our pro-choice actions strong in your community

9. Distribute NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin membership brochures to your neighbors or co-workers.

10. Announce a pro-choice event in your classes, workplace, or place of worship. For a list of events visit our Community Events page.

11. Become an escort at a reproductive health clinic.

12. Go to a pro-choice rally or demonstration.  Tell us about your experience.

13. Intern with NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin.

14. Ask your clergyperson about your church, synagogue or mosque’s position on choice. Email his or her response to info@prochoicewisconsin.org.

15. Ask your local school board members or principal whether the schools in your area teach comprehensive sexuality education. Report their response to info@prochoicewisconsin.org.

16. Run for office on a pro-choice platform.

17. Learn about Crisis Pregnancy Centers and how they use deception and misinformation to convince women to carry out a pregnancy even if she wishes to terminate.

19. Make a donation to the Women's Medical Fund, a Wisconsin organization that helps women with financial need pay for an abortion.

20. Tell four friends about the threats facing the right to choose. Then bring them to a NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin fundraising event.

21. Start a Campus Organization on your campus.

22. Volunteer on a pro-choice candidate’s campaign.

23. Have a bake sale or garage sale and send the proceeds to NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin.

24. Abortion is illegal in Wisconsin.  Help with our Roe of Our Own campaign to help us change this archaic law. To get started, click here.

25. Stay informed! Watch your local papers for news about the most recent attempts to roll back a woman’s right to choose.  Mail NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin new clippings.

26. Ask your doctor if s/he offers Mifeprex and if not, why not. Email his or her response to info@prochoicewisconsin.org

27. Talk to your mother, sister, aunt, or daughter about how the pro-choice position improves women’s lives.

28. Ask ten of your friends to make a contribution to NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin. Send them to our website to make a secure donation.

29. Thank a Member of Congress from your state for fighting for choice. To find your congressional representative or senators click here.

30. Give NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin buttons, t-shirts, and stickers to your friends and family for their birthdays and the holidays.

31. Send a letter of appreciation to your reproductive health care provider.

32. Send letters to ten friends asking them to join NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, include a return envelope with first class stamp.

33. Begin your home answering machine message with the words, “Thank you for calling a pro-choice household!”

34. Send NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin pro-choice resources to members of your city council and ask your mayor to visit www.prochoicewisconsin.org

35. Hold a screening and discussion of The Education of Shelby Knox at your home.

36. Check NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin’s online Take Action Center regularly to learn ways you can help pass pro-choice legislation.

39. Know your rights. Email info@prochoicewisconsin.org to request a copy of Who Decides: A State-by-State Review of Abortion and Reproductive Rights from NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin. Ask for an extra copy and donate it to your local library.

40. Write “Visit prochoicewisconsin.org TODAY!” after your name on all of your e-mails. Or add a url to your email signature that links to the www.prochoicewisconsin.org webpage.

41. Read about the current laws in Wisconsin.

42. Link your personal Web site to the NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin webpage and encourage 4 friends to do the same.

43. Get a personalized pro-choice license plate.

44. Make the NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin logo your screen saver or wall paper.

45. Support Wisconsin pro-choice campus groups.

47. Speak out when someone presents an anti-choice myth as fact.  Prepare yourself with some snappy answers to common anti-choice statements.

48. When you meet an elected official or candidate, ask if s/he’s pro-choice. Donate your time or money only to those candidates who are pro-choice.

49. Talk to your husband, father, uncle, or son about how the pro-choice position improves women’s lives.

50. If you have a personal story about abortion, share it with a friend.

51. Visit and support only pro-choice doctors.

52. Find out if your insurance plan covers the full range of reproductive health services, including contraception and abortion; if not, ask them to expand their coverage. Or encourage your employer to choose a different health plan.

53. Urge your union to negotiate for health insurance coverage that includes the full range of reproductive health services, including contraception and abortion. Or start a workplace organizing initiative for contraceptive coverage.

54. Call into a talk radio program and discuss the ways in which reproductive rights are being restricted in Wisconsin and nationwide.

55. 93% of Wisconsin counties do not have an abortion provider. Join a program that gives rides to women who do not have a provider in their county.

56. Learn whether your elected officials are pro-choice.

57. Talk to your kids about safe sex.

60. If you know someone who has chosen to have an abortion, support her before, during and after the procedure.

62. Start a grassroots lobbying team. Bring local pro-choice activists together and work with NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin to get the most recent pro-choice messages to your legislators.

63. Solicit small businesses, churches or civic groups in your area; ask them to support NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin.

64. Email Barack Obama to thank him for his pro-choice stance.

66. Visit your county or city clerk and become authorized to register people to vote. Register at least 10 new pro-choice voters.

68. Make sure your teenager’s sex education class curriculum includes information about the full range of reproductive health services, including contraception, emergency contraception and abortion.  Email us at info@prochoicewisconsin.org and tell us what you found out.

69. Host a house party and talk about what being pro-choice means to you.

70. Start a book club and discuss books with pro-choice themes, such as How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America: Freedom Politics and the War on Sex by Cristina Page.

71. Get your prescriptions from pro-choice pharmacists.

72. Send an e-mail to your friends that includes the www.prochoicewisconsin.org link asking them to make a contribution. Then ask them to pass the e-mail to ten friends.

73. Write to your legislators and ask them to keep Wisconsin's Contraceptive Equity Law, requiring insurance companies to cover contraception if they cover other prescription drugs. To find your legislators click here.

74. Take part in a lobby day with NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin and talk to your legislators about choice.

75. E-mail your friends and family before elections, remind them to vote and tell them which candidates are pro-choice.

77. Ask your doctor how to use your birth control pills as emergency contraception.

78. Write a column for your local or school newspaper explaining the threats to choice.

79. On your birthday, have a party. Ask your friends to give a donation to NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin in lieu of gifts. They can make a secure donation online.

80. Volunteer at a reproductive health clinic or hospital as a translator to ensure full communication on reproductive health needs among non-native English speakers.

81. Support child-friendly workplaces.

82. Tell Governor Walker you do not support his anti-choice policies.

84. Check with your hospital to ensure that it provides Emergency Contraception to rape survivors; if it doesn’t, demand that it begin to do so.

85. Make a commitment to write or call your Members of Congress in opposition to anti-choice legislation at least 4 times a year.

86. Keep up with reproductive rights legislation in Wisconsin.

87. Ask your state legislators not to let anti-choice politics interfere with science. Ask them to oppose restrictions on stem cell research. To find your legislators click here.

88. Join a political party and encourage the party to recruit and support pro-choice candidates.

89. If you receive or hear about biased, anti-choice pregnancy counseling, report it to the state board of medicine or state attorney general. Email your experiences to info@prochoicewisconsin.org

90. Help low-income women have access to abortion-donate to an abortion fund.

91. Make sure your state political party platform fully supports the right to choose; if it doesn’t, join the platform committee.

92. Consider going to medical school to become an abortion provider.

93. Support public funding for abortion for low-income women, women in the military and women in prison.

94. Support dramatic funding increases in public funding for contraception.

95. Urge your federal legislators to support making no-cost birth control available under the Affordable Care Act. To find your federal legislator click here.

96. Urge the National Institutes of Health to boost research on new contraceptive technologies to give women more options.

97. Make sure your school’s clinics provide Emergency Contraception; publicize its availability.

98. Ask your religious leader to speak out on the ethics of being pro-choice.

99. Do you remember what it was like before Roe v. Wade? Tell a young woman.

100. Remind people about the importance of having a pro-choice president - Point out President Obama's pro-choice successes, such as overturning the global gag rule and expanding health care options for women under the Affordable Care Act.
