Insurance Prohibition for Abortion
Anti-choice state legislators have enacted laws prohibiting insurance companies from coving abortion services, or requiring women to pay an extra premium to receive coverage for abortion care. Women should not be denied coverage for reproductive health services-a basic part of women's health care-by politicians imposing their personal beliefs on private medical decisions. Wisconsin law In Wisconsin, insurance provided through the Private Employer Health Care Purchasing Alliance, a voluntary program for private employers, may not include coverage for abortion unless directly and medically necessary to preserve the woman's life. Coverage for abortions not medically necessary to preserve the woman's life may be obtained only by an optional rider or supplemental coverage provision that is offered and provided on an individual basis for which an additional premium is paid. However, nothing in the act requires an insurer or employer to offer or provide coverage of abortions.
