Political Updates

You may have seen that Wisconsin Right to Life has already said they intend to pursue an extreme anti-choice agenda next session. They are pulling out all the stops to restrict women's access to abortion and reproductive healthcare in Wisconsin, and weíll need your help to stop them. State legislators are already lining up to sign on to this extreme agenda, including forced ultrasounds for women seeking an abortion.

Anticipated attacks in 2013 include:
  • forced ultrasounds, a new restriction that Assembly and Senate anti-choice leadership have said is a "top priority" this session
  • a ban on abortions after 20 weeks, allowing politicians to make decisions rather than a woman and her doctor
  • more bans on insurance coverage of abortion

Other states have been successful in defeating some of these attacks or in lessening the burden they place on women and their doctors. We are working with our partner organizations to strategize for the legislative session to ensure we are ready to hit the ground running. In making these strategic decisions, we need to know we can count on you to make sure we have the resources to fight back. Join us in showing your commitment to fighting anti-choice attacks by donating today.

In addition to fighting these legislative attacks, we have begun to roll out Choice Out Loud, which is a new, proactive program to educate and engage Wisconsinites aged 30 and younger to make sure they know the importance of this issue and what life before Roe was like for women in the United States. We will also be holding events throughout the state, from Madison and Milwaukee to Waukesha and Stevens Point, because this is truly a statewide fight. We must make sure everyone in every corner of the state has a chance to have their voice heard in the fight to preserve meaningful choice for women.

At our Wine and Choice event in November, Senator Fred Risser shared a story about how when he first entered the Legislature, contraceptives were considered indecent articles, and a college professor was arrested for displaying them in his classroom. We have come a long way since then, but we still have so much left to do in order to ensure that women in Wisconsin have access to reliable and affordable reproductive health care and to safe and legal abortion services. Your commitment to fighting back by joining our action network by adding your email (see left sidebar) or contributing today is critical to our ability to have a robust strategy in the 2013-14 legislative session.

This year, we are commemorating the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, it couldnít be clearer just how important that decision was for women across the United States yet also how fragile the rights protected by Roe are in the face of a strong anti-choice state government. But, even in the face of a strong anti-choice presence in the Legislature and Governorís office, we are up to the challenge and we hope you are, too.

As the new executive director at NARAL, I look forward to working with you to ensure that medical decisions are made between a woman and her doctor, not by politicians. Please feel free to reach out with ideas or suggestions or if you are willing to get involved in your area. In order to be successful, we will have to truly treat this as a team effort, and I want to hear from you on how to best engage with you and your community.

We have lots of work ahead of us, but I couldnít be more honored to be on this team with you. Thank you for your support of the pro-choice movement.

Sincerely,

Jenni Dye
Executive Director
