Covering a range of topics, including pop culture, health, reproductive rights, violence, education, relationships and more, Valenti provides young women a primer on why feminism matters. Happy Reading! Past Books June 2008 - Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture by Ariel Levy. Meet the Female Chauvinist Pig — the new brand of "empowered woman" who wears the Playboy bunny as a talisman, bares all for Girls Gone Wild, pursues casual sex as if it were a sport, and embraces "raunch culture" wherever she finds it. If male chauvinist pigs of years past thought of women as pieces of meat, Female Chauvinist Pigs of today are doing them one better, making sex objects of other women — and of themselves. They think they're being brave, they think they're being funny, but in Female Chauvinist Pigs, New York magazine writer Ariel Levy asks if the joke is on them. May 2008 - In This Common Secret, Dr. Susan Wicklund chronicles her emotional and dramatic twenty-year career on the front lines of the abortion war. This is the story of Susan's love for a profession that means listening to women and helping them through one of the most pivotal and controversial events in their lives. Hers is also a calling that means sleeping on planes and commuting between clinics in different states—and that requires her to wear a bulletproof vest and to carry a .38 caliber revolver. This is also the story of the women whom Susan serves, women whose options are increasingly limited. Copies are available at A Room of One’s Own. April 2008 - Christina Page’s book, How the Pro-Choice Movement Saved America, the first book to address the positive transformation our society has undergone because of our ability to plan when and if to have children. The book also exposes the pro-life movement's far-reaching—and dangerous—agenda. In it you'll find frightening truths about the pro-life movement's war against contraception, their goals to change the culture of sex across America, and what's at stake for all of us if it succeeds.
