"Abstinence-only" programs could be coming soon to a school near you
Wisconsin has been a leader in making sure our schools teach comprehensive sex education that works. But an anti-choice lawmaker wants to repeal our sex-education law. Speak out now – contact your Wisconsin lawmakers and tell them to oppose this dangerous bill. We helped to pass our sex-education law to improve teens’ health. A 2008 report released by the Wisconsin Division of Public Health found that 45 percent of high school students self-reported they were sexually active. Of those teens who reported having sex, only 61 percent used a condom during their last sexual encounter. Our legislators responded by passing the Healthy Youth Act, signed into law by former Gov. Doyle in early 2010. Anti-choice legislators fought this bill when it passed and promised to work for its repeal. Now, anti-choice Sen. Mary Lazich wants to take us back to the days of failed “abstinence-only” programs. She is circulating a bill (LRB 2088) that repeals the Healthy Youth Act by eliminating requirements that sex education programs in our public schools be age-appropriate, medically accurate, and comprehensive. Under Lazich’s proposal, sex education programs will no longer be required to teach accurate information about both abstinence and contraceptives to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Tell your legislators to oppose this dangerous bill. We can’t afford to roll back the clock on sex education. Wisconsin teens need accurate and comprehensive sex education to ensure their health and safety.
