The Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor have now been completed, with a committee vote to occur on Tuesday, July 28th. A full Senate vote is expected before August 7th, when there is a Senate recess.
NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, along with NARAL Pro-Choice America, decided to endorse Judge Sotomayor's confirmation after learning more about her stance on abortion rights during the hearings.
In explaining the decision to endorse Judge Sotomayor, Nancy Keenan, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, offered these words: "We are pleased that Judge Sotomayor expressed stronger support for the established constitutional right to privacy than either Chief Justice Roberts or Justice Alito, both of whom had anti-choice records before being nominated to their current positions. She also articulated several times throughout the hearing that the constitutional right to privacy includes the right to choose." To read the full press release announcing NARAL's support click here.
Sens. Kohl and Feingold asked Judge Sotomayor fair questions, including questions regarding the right to choose. Click here to see a video of Sen. Kohl asking Judge Sotomayor about her views regarding abortion.
