Support Proposed Madison Clinic

Modified: 04/03/2009

UW Hospital and Clinics, Meriter and the UW Medical Foundation have made the decision to provide 2nd trimester abortions at the Madison Surgery Center. Medical leaders in Dane County have recognized a gap in care after the retirement of Dr. Dennis Christensen, who has been providing abortion care in Madison for many years. Since Dr. Christensen’s retirement in December, there is no provider of 2nd trimester abortions serving Madison, Dane County, or the rest of south central Wisconsin. UW and Meriter have stepped in to fill the gap in critical reproductive health services left by Dr. Christensen’s retirement.

This decision has created an orchestrated response by the anti-choice forces including the Alliance Defense Fund, Pro-Life Wisconsin, and Wisconsin Right to Life – groups that oppose all abortions and who generally oppose birth control. UW Hospital and Clinics Board of Authority will be voting on this decision on Wednesday, February 4th.

Take action now to tell the UW Hospital and Clinics Board of Authority that you support and applaud the decision to provide access to this critical reproductive health service for women in South Central Wisconsin and across the state.

Why support abortion access at the Madison Surgery Center:
  • This decision by the Madison Surgery Center, UW Hospital and Clinics, Meriter Hospital, and the UW Medical Foundation should be applauded and supported.
  • Women should have access to comprehensive reproductive health services in South Central Wisconsin.
  • The health care providers and professionals who took the initiative in making sure these abortion services are available and accessible to women, sometimes in the most tragic situations, take care of tens of thousands of patients throughout this state and identified a gap in women’s reproductive health care that simply must be met so that women are not abandoned and their health and safety not jeopardized.
  • The efforts of these health care entities and professionals reflect the strong commitment of the health care community to fulfill their public health responsibility to provide comprehensive health care to their patients and to the women of south-central Wisconsin.
  • Patients 20 weeks and up in their pregnancy are best served to have an abortion in a hospital setting with the resources of a hospital readily available.
  • Without these services, women in certain untenable situations, such as those experiencing health problems in pregnancy, would have nowhere to go in our community. Though only 1% of abortions are performed after 20 weeks, these patients need to be taken care of in the most compassionate, comprehensive medical setting, which is what this initiative proposes.
