2008 was the 35th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. Unfortunately, Wisconsin still has an outdated law on its books that makes abortion illegal. Without Roe v. Wade, Wisconsin women would lose their right to a safe, legal abortion. Thus, we need a Roe of Our Own in Wisconsin. Show your support by signing the Roe of Our Own petition. We cannot count on Roe v. Wade to protect our right to choose. Even after 35 years, Roe is still under attack. In 2007 - for the first time ever - the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ban on a safe medical procedure. The Federal Abortion Ban criminalizes abortions considered safest for some women in some circumstances, even when a woman's health is threatened. In a 5-4 decision, with former President Bush's two appointed anti-choice Justices siding against women's health, the court disregarded years of precedent and declared that abortion bans can ignore women's health. The anti-choice majority Bush created on the court persists and this signals a dangerous imbalance that could further undermine or allow the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This puts Wisconsin women in a dire situation. We have an antiquated abortion ban still on the books that does not make exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or pregnancies that risk the health of the woman. If Roe falls, Wisconsin women and doctors will become criminals for seeking or assisting in abortion care. Such individuals would face prison time and fines. Wisconsin women can no longer depend on the Supreme Court to protect our right to a safe, legal abortion. We need a Roe of Our Own so that no matter what happens to Roe at the federal level, Wisconsin women are protected. Take Action!
